Choosing an inverter
The input voltage has to match your battery bank. A 12 volt inverter runs from a single 12 volt battery or a parallel 12 volt bank — the simplest setup, and the usual choice for cars, RVs and small backup systems. A 24 volt inverter needs two 12 volt batteries in series. For the same output wattage it draws roughly half the DC current, which means smaller cable and lower losses on longer runs — common in trucks, fleet vehicles and larger off-grid banks.
Never connect a 12 volt inverter to a 24 volt bank, or the reverse.
Modified sine wave inverters are the economical choice and run most resistive loads, power tools and simple appliances. Pure sine wave output matches utility power much more closely, with low harmonic distortion — the right choice for sensitive electronics, variable-speed motors, microwaves with inverter controls, medical equipment and high-end audio. If the manufacturer of your equipment specifies pure sine wave, use a pure sine wave inverter.
